SUSTAINABLE SOIL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES

Sustainable Soil Management Program is the development program by the coordination of government's various parties, non-governmental organization and private organization that was conducted as per the agreement between HMG/N and Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation. This project agreement between HMG/N and Swiss Government was conducted as first phase from 1999 to 2002 and as second phase from 2003 to 2007. This project helps the national, district and local government and non-governmental organizations in the promotion of sustainable soil management activities. Organizations agreed as per the project proposal are considered as the Collaborating Institutions. Program management unit assists in preparing project proposal process and accounting and analysis of the proposed programs. Apart from that, it also monitors the conducted activities. Soil testing and service division under agricultural department works as a central point in coordination with agricultural and co-operative ministry.

Activities of sustainable soil management programs are centralized in the mid mountainous region of Nepal . Entrance point of the program is small and middle class families of the farmer and central point is based farming process. Working areas of this program are Baitadi, Doti and Achham in Far Western Region, Dailekh and Surkhet in Mid Western Region, Parbat, Syangja and Baglung in Western Region, Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhupalchowk and Dolkha in Central Region and Okhaldhunga in Eastern Region.

 
Objectives

The main objective of this project is to promote the adaptive/adoptive and enhanced technology for sustainable soil management through the involvement of the farmers by keeping the fertility of the soil constant and increasing the productivity of agribusiness and supporting for the improvement of the living standard of the farmers.

  1. Study and tests on the sustainable soil management for agricultural farming
  2. Study/tests of different technology on the sustainable soil management as per the farmers' guidance
  3. Expansion and awareness of the sustainable soil management activities and exercises on the farmer level
 
Major activities
  1. Management of decayed material (make compost, management of united crops, producing decayed compost)
  2. Organizing the mixed crop process for productivity increment and soil conservation
  3. Reuse of the decayed material
  4. Including year and multiyear,crops in agricultural process
  5. Organizing the activities like rural industrial development and refining and marketing management to the local level through experienced organizations' project to the local level pertaining to sustainable soil management program
