DEPARTMENT OF FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND QUALITY CONTROL

The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, established in B.S. 2018 as Food Department, later changed to Central Food Research Laboratory, from 2057 expanded and developed its scope. This department has long been striving for the enhancement of safety assurance in food and feed supplies in the country. Further, the Department has a paramount role in augmenting appropriate food processing and post-harvesting techniques to promote agribusiness and thereby ameliorate the livelihood of the people who are acutely in needs. The nutritional activities conducted during the calendar year predominantly focused on nutritional improvement of different communities inhabiting in various geographical regions of the country.

This department intends to provide services and support to Food Quality Control Division, Food Technology Development and Training Division, National Food Laboratory, National Nutritional Program in Kathmandu and regional food laboratories in Biratnagar, Hetauda, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi and Apple Processing Center in Jumla.
 
Objectives
  1. Quality Control Service mobilization to preserve the rights of the consumers with decent food supplies from production level to sales and distribution.
 
Food Quality Control

Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has been implementing food quality control programs for the prevention of food adulteration and assurance of availability of safe and quality foods. Food Law has been implemented throughout the nation. Food acts and regulations are the basic legislative frameworks for ensuring safe food supplies to the consumer. The major food quality control infrastructure is composed of inspectorate, laboratory facilities and enforcement mechanism. The main activities are inspection, law enforcement, food industry licensing, food standardization and consumer awareness.

 
Food Technology Development and Dissemination
Food Technology Development and Dissemination Division of the department has been serving in the field of food availability in the nation by developing and promoting the technology for storing, preserving and processing the in-country food products. The main activities are to develop the processing technology for food entrepreneurs, to serve the food industries in solving the technological problems and to train in food technology in order to promote the self reliance job.
 
National Food Laboratory
Different samples of food and feed commodities received in this department from different sources are first registered in the sample reception unit. Then based on the information of the document associated with each of the sample received, the registration unit puts respective code number to each of the samples and forwards the samples to National Food Laboratory. Upon reception of the samples as forwarded by reception unit, National Food Laboratory makes plan of analysis based on the nature of samples as well as requested parameters to be analyzed and proceeds forward for the actual laboratory work.
